Born and raised in Wellington, Phillipa has been apart of the Wentwood family since 2017. An integral part of the farm, Phillipa is our chief foal watcher. The unsung heroes of the breeding industry, long nights in all weather conditions, we can always rely on her to keep watch of our broodmares pre foaling. We so appreciate everyone who makes up our foaling unit, especially Phillipa.
Where does your passion for horses come from? It’s in my name. Phillipa means lover of horse. I always wanted a pony. I learnt to ride at 9, got my first pony at 10. My family isn’t really horsey
How did you get started in the thoroughbred industry? I always wanted to work with horses. When I left school I worked on a stud in Cambridge, right next door to where Wentwood now stands
What is your favorite part about working at Wentwood Grange? Foaling with Des and Dean, the support we have and the horses I get to work with
What is your favorite time of year? Foaling season
What is your proudest moment or best memory since you started with Wentwood Grange? Helping with a tough foaling and getting a good result. Foaling what turned out to be my first black-type winner
Do you have a favourite broodmare? Natalie Wood, Secret Lily, Red Delicious, with a soft spot for Orovela
Who is someone who inspires you? DJ O’Sullivan & Des Hawkins
Cats or Dogs? Cats
Fillies or Colts? Colts because fillies are stubborn
If you could sit down and have a drink with any three people (alive or passed) who would you choose? Bruce Springsteen, My Nana, David Bowie
Do you have any hobbies outside of work? Cross-stitching and reading
If someone approached you eager to enter the thoroughbred industry, what words of wisdom would you have for them? Listen to everyone and observe everything. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
